Catnook is a focus timer with a cat, made by Clariva (“we”). This page explains what the app collects, where it goes, and how to delete it.
The short version
- Without an account, everything stays on your phone. Catnook has no ads, no analytics and no tracking.
- Signing in is optional. If you sign in, your progress is backed up to our server so it comes back after a reinstall or on a new phone.
- We never sell or share your data, and you can delete your account from inside the app at any time.
What stays on your phone
Your focus sessions, to-do list, tags, fish, cats, room, sound mixes and settings are stored on your device. Without an account, none of it leaves the device. Reminders and alerts are scheduled by the phone itself; no notification service is involved. The app’s fonts are built in, so it doesn’t download anything from font services either.
If you sign in
Signing in is optional and exists only for backup. You sign in with Google, or with Apple on iPhone and iPad. From that sign-in we receive and keep:
- your name, as it appears on that account;
- your email address;
- an account ID that Google or Apple use to recognise you.
We never see your Google or Apple password.
While you are signed in, Catnook saves the following to our server:
- your focus sessions: when they happened, how long they were, their tag, the task they were for, and the fish they earned;
- your to-do list: each task’s text, due date, priority, tag and whether it’s done, and when you completed tasks;
- your fish history, and the items and cats you own;
- your settings: timer, sounds and saved sound mixes, tags, alerts, your cat’s name and how your room is arranged.
We use this only to back up and restore your data and to keep your devices in step. We don’t analyse it, use it for advertising, or sell or share it with anyone.
Purchases
Catnook Pro is bought through Google Play or the App Store, and Google or Apple handle the payment; we never see your card details. To check whether a subscription is active, the app uses RevenueCat, a subscription service. RevenueCat receives an anonymous ID for the app on your device, your purchase receipts, and basic device details such as the operating system version. It does not receive your name, email or Catnook account. Your Pro status is not stored on our server.
Who else is involved
- Google: Sign in with Google, and Google Play purchases.
- Apple: Sign in with Apple, and App Store purchases.
- RevenueCat: checking subscription status, as described above.
- Oracle Cloud: hosts our server.
- Google Drive: holds encrypted backup copies of our database. They are encrypted on our server before upload, so Google cannot read them.
Where your data is stored
On our server in Toronto, Canada, with encrypted backup copies in Google Drive. If you live outside Canada, your data is transferred there.
How we protect it
- Everything between the app and our server travels over an encrypted (HTTPS) connection.
- On your phone, the app keeps its sign-in tokens in the system’s secure storage (Android Keystore or iOS Keychain).
- On our server, sign-in tokens are stored only as one-way hashes.
- Backups are encrypted before they leave the server.
How long we keep it
- Your account: until you delete it.
- When you delete your account, everything listed under “If you sign in” is removed from our database immediately. We keep only an anonymous marker (a random ID with no name, email or data) so that a phone that is still signed in can’t accidentally recreate the account.
- Backups: each backup copy is kept for 30 days and then deleted, so deleted data is gone from every backup within 60 days at most.
- Logs: our server does not log your requests. Error logs, which can include an IP address when something goes wrong, are deleted after about four weeks.
Deleting your account
In the app, open Settings → Account → Delete my account. You can also ask us by email. Deleting your account doesn’t cancel a Catnook Pro subscription; cancel that in Google Play or the App Store.
Your rights
You can ask us for a copy of your data, to correct it, or to delete it, by emailing the address below. We’ll answer within 30 days. If you live in the EU or the UK, you also have the right to complain to your local data protection authority.
Permissions the app asks for
- Notifications: to tell you when a session or a break ends.
- On Android, running in the foreground and keeping the device awake during a session, so the timer and your ambient sounds keep going while the screen is off; and starting after a restart, so a scheduled alarm survives it.
- Internet: only for signing in, backup and purchases.
Children
Catnook is not directed at children under 13, and we don’t knowingly collect data from them. If you believe a child has signed in, email us and we’ll delete the account.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, we’ll update the date at the top of this page. If a change affects what we collect or how we use it, we’ll tell you in the app.
